Chapter 12

A dog treat test

‘You said Boo-Boo, Boo-Boo, Boo-Boo,’ Clarence was saying, very flatly.

‘It’s just Boo-Boo,’ Maxine explained as Olympus walked away towards Lucia, pulling Clarence with him, arm first.

‘I see it now! It’s on the floor!’ he shouted, peering at the floor behind him as he edged involuntarily away with the large puppy pulling ahead of him. ‘I see it!’

‘Her!’ announced Maxine, glad the conversation was over.

‘Welcome! Welcome! Woof!’ said Margery, smiling at the group.

Gigi and Yasmin were next to Heath and Brady, with Maxine and Boo-Boo the other side of him. Elysse was between Robin and Damien, and Clarence and Olympus. Margery went to Robin and took his mobile phone.

‘No naughty crutches today, Robby,’ she declared smiling at him. Robin looked about the other class members and then smiled furtively at the floor.

Elysse’s heart was pounding. She felt unsure how the evening might go and didn’t want to talk to Heath about what had happened right there in the puppy class. She’d wait until the end, she thought. She tried to catch his eye to see what response she got but he never seemed to be looking her way. Instead, he was chatting to Gigi and Maxine most of the time. Understandable, she thought. They’re standing next to him, and he is very polite and I wasn’t.

Elysse watched as Gigi pushed her hair behind her ears several times more than was really needed to restrain her hair. Then she watched Gigi laughing a great deal too much and too long at almost everything Heath said. Next, Gigi was moving closer to Heath and lightly touching his arm. Maybe he’ll call her Yasmin, hoped Elysse, and she looked away.

Cross walking the dogs took place with clear improvements on the previous session, followed by hide and seek, and this time Lucia found her way to Elysse’s hiding places whilst a big part of Elysse now wished the puppy hadn’t. Heath remained distant but visibly enthusiastic about the events of the evening’s dog training and Brady was responding well. Gigi was finding every possible excuse to approach Heath, it seemed to Elysse that Heath didn’t seem averse to her approaches by any means. At the same time, neither Brady nor Heath was paying any attention to Elysse. In fact, it seemed to her as if, for Heath, she simply didn’t exist.

Sydney arrived at the end of the session and made a beeline for Elysse, passing Heath on the way and watching as he chatted with a giggling, hair tucking, Gigi.

‘So?’ asked Sydney abruptly.

‘So – what?’

‘So – how did it go with lover-boy?’

‘I assume you mean Heathcliff. Well, you can see him, Syd. He seems to be getting on just fine with a nice, young blonde number,’ said Elysse sourly.

‘Any what about the lovely brunette number I see before me?’

‘No dice.’

‘Nada?’

‘Nada.’

‘Give me your dog treats and follow me,’ said Sydney sternly.

‘No chance,’ replied Elysse. ‘Please leave it, Syd.’

‘Nada chance of that,’ replied Sydney curtly. ‘If you don’t, I’ll declare your undying love for Heathcliff Rochester to every human and every canine here.
